iBeacon featured at Coachella
It looks like the celebrities of the Coachella Arts & Music Festival had to share their stages with a new up-and-comer this year: the iBeacon! For the first time, the festival incorporated BLE technology into their iOS app, strategically placing beacons around the festival’s fairgrounds to help navigate and notify festival-goers of the weekend’s planned events. Upon opening the app on April 9th, users were delivered a message that said: “Enable On-Site iBeacon notifications by enabling Location and Bluetooth!”
While this might be expected given the SXSW2014 implementation that we saw, Coachella bends more towards an art/entertainment experience than the tech-focused SXSW. This has us wondering: what venues and/or festivals might next see the value proposition of hyper-local notifications, and start incorporating BLE into their apps as well? And, how else can events use iBeacon to add to their users’ enjoyment of the experience?
Although we searched high and low for more information regarding this implementation, our search came up as dry as the Southern California desert. Were any of you readers at Coachella, and did you get a chance to participate in their iBeacon experience? Let us know your thoughts below!
